  • What Are Penis Pumps?

Penis pumps, or vacuum constriction devices, are mechanical devices that are fitted over the penis that provide a suctioning force to draw blood to the penile shaft. This is one of the most popular non-surgical methods to enlarge the penis and is recommended for the rehabilitation of men who have recently underwent surgeries, which can lead to temporary impotence such as radical prostatectomy. The post-operative use of a penis pump has also been found to prevent penile atrophy, which occurs when no erection is attained for prolonged periods.

    How the penis pump works

The penis pump uses mechanical or manual pumping action to create a vacuum over the penis, drawing blood to the area to create and maintain an erection. The device is made up of an acrylic tube and a pump, which can be a squeeze ball, a hand grip, or an electrical device. For increased effectiveness, vendors recommend 30-minute sessions for 3 to 4 times a week.

Risks of using a penis pump

Since a penis pump uses a manual or motorized pump to create suction, excessive suction can cause vascular damage to the penis. This is the most common disadvantage to using a penis pump, aside from the pain that occurs along with vascular damage. Damage to the nerves can also occur when the pump is not used properly, leading to permanent loss of sensation in the area.

Different users see different results. Some complain that the resulting erection does not resemble the real thing--that the engorged organ is spongy, semi-flaccid, and cold. In some cases, the penis has an unsightly purple color.

Penis pumps have been touted to be effective at creating and maintaining an erection for more satisfying sexual experiences. However, they also have their risks and the results may be less than what you expect.
